Southern Miss routs Georgia Southern 10-1 behind eight RBIs from Golden Eagles
The University of Southern Mississippi baseball team defeated Georgia Southern 10-1 Friday night at Pete Taylor Park in Hattiesburg, securing its fifth consecutive Sun Belt series win. The Golden Eagles, ranked No. 8 nationally, improved to 39-14 overall and 21-8 in conference play.
Eight different players drove in at least one run for Southern Miss, including a game-high three RBIs by Ben Higdon. The team has now won eight straight games and extended its winning streak to 19 in May. The victory also marked their 18th win in their last 19 regular-season contests this month.
The Golden Eagles scored first, taking a 1-0 lead in the opening inning. Seth Smith drew a leadoff walk, and Kyle Morrison doubled to left center to put Southern Miss ahead. Georgia Southern tied the game in the second on Sean White’s eighth home run of the season, but Southern Miss responded with five more runs over the next several innings to seal the victory.
Southern Miss extended its lead with solo runs in the third and fourth frames. Matthew Russo drove in the first run with a single, and Joey Urban doubled home the third run. The Eagles added two more runs in the fifth and seventh, and exploded for four runs in the eighth, highlighted by Smith’s third home run of the year and a two-run single from Higdon.
Starting pitcher Camden Clark earned his eighth win of the season, allowing just one run on five hits over five innings while striking out nine. Kros Sivley pitched the final four innings, permitting only a double in the ninth with four strikeouts and no walks, securing his third save. Georgia Southern starter Ethan Garrett took the loss, giving up three runs over 3 2/3 innings.
Prior to the game, Southern Miss honored eight senior players. The teams will meet again Saturday at 1 p.m., with the Golden Eagles looking to clinch at least a share of the Sun Belt regular-season title with a win.
