Ben Higdon Drives in Three as Southern Miss Sweeps ULM 7-3
HATTIESBURG, Miss. — Ben Higdon drove in three runs, and Camden Sunstrom pitched six strong innings to lead Southern Miss to a 7-3 victory over ULM on Sunday at Pete Taylor Park. The win secured the Golden Eagles’ third straight series sweep in Sun Belt Conference play.
Southern Miss improved to 34-14 overall and 16-8 in league play, moving into sole possession of second place in the conference standings. The team also recorded its 20th home victory, reaching that mark for the 11th consecutive season, and extended its winning streak in the month of May to 14 games.
The Golden Eagles jumped ahead early, scoring four runs in the third inning against ULM starter Seaver Sheets. Davis Gillespie and Matthew Russo singled to load the bases, and Drey Barrett brought in the first run with a single. Higdon followed with a two-run single, and Tucker Stockman added an RBI single to cap the scoring in the inning.
Sunstrom limited ULM to four hits over six innings, allowing only a solo home run by Davis Mauzy, his third of the season. Sunstrom struck out five and did not walk a batter, improving his record to 4-3. Southern Miss added three more runs in the sixth, highlighted by RBI singles from Barrett and Higdon.
ULM scored two runs in the seventh inning off Kros Sivley, who made his 97th career appearance for the Golden Eagles. Davis Mauzy hit his team-leading third home run in the game. Sheets pitched 2 2/3 innings in relief, allowing four runs on two hits with three walks and four strikeouts, suffering his second loss of the season.
Southern Miss will travel to James Madison for a three-game series beginning Friday, May 8, at 5 p.m. CT, marking the team’s first-ever series at JMU. The Golden Eagles aim to extend their winning streak and improve their standing in the Sun Belt.
