Southern Miss pitchers set school record in doubleheader sweep of ULM
HATTIESBURG, Miss. — Southern Miss baseball swept ULM in a Sun Belt Conference doubleheader Saturday at Pete Taylor Park. The 12th-ranked Golden Eagles won 2-1 in 11 innings and 3-1 in the nightcap, extending their winning streak against the Warhawks.
Southern Miss (33-14, 15-8 Sun Belt) tied a school record with 35 strikeouts across both games, including 15 strikeouts by Camden Clark in the second game. Clark, making his third start of the season, pitched seven innings, allowing one run on three hits and no walks, earning his sixth win.
Clark’s 15 strikeouts matched the most by a Golden Eagle since Tanner Hall struck out that many against Arkansas State in April 2023. The only blemish was a solo home run by Marcus Aranda in the second inning. The Eagles tied the game in the third on a fielder’s choice by Joey Urban and took the lead in the fourth on a double by Ben Higdon. Higdon then scored in the seventh on a dropped caught stealing attempt by ULM.
ULM (24-23, 10-13) starter Brandt Corley took the loss, allowing two runs on three hits over 5 2/3 innings. Josh Och pitched the final two innings for the save, allowing no runs on two hits. The game featured a combined 19 strikeouts, tying a school record.
In the opener, Matthew Russo’s double in the 11th inning drove in Davis Gillespie to give Southern Miss its seventh walk-off victory of the season. Kyle Morrison added a solo home run in the fourth. ULM scored first on a groundout in the second inning but was held scoreless afterward.
Pitcher Grayden Harris threw seven innings for the Eagles, allowing one run on five hits. Colby Allen pitched the final four frames, earning his fifth win. ULM reliever Tyler Roark suffered the loss after giving up the game-winning hit in the 11th.
The series concludes with a game scheduled for 3 p.m. Sunday.
