Southern Baseball Tops Mississippi Valley State 8-1
ITTA BENA, Miss. — Southern’s baseball team edged Mississippi Valley State 8-1 on Saturday at Magnolia Field. The Jaguars, who lead the series 5-0 since 2012, improved to 23-21 overall and 16-7 in SWAC play.
Lucas Valencia pitched five innings for Southern, allowing two runs, with three strikeouts and one walk. His performance helped secure the victory for the Jaguars. Tanner Aoki continued his strong hitting, going 2-for-3 with an RBI and a walk. Johnny Escobalez Jr. contributed with a single, a walk, a stolen base, and a run scored.
Other notable contributors included Eric Williams, who recorded two singles, and Gabe Huelsing, Jace Jones, and Israel Ramos, each with a hit or a walk. Southern’s offense was effective, especially in the fourth inning, when they scored four runs to take an 8-0 lead. Mississippi Valley State scored its only run in the fifth inning on a single from Tanner Aoki.
