Mississippi Valley State Stops Skid with 13-11 Win Over Jackson State

Mississippi Valley State University’s baseball team scored 13 runs on 17 hits to end a losing streak and secure at least a split of the season series against Jackson State. The contest, played at Magnolia Field in Itta Bena, Mississippi, saw the Diamond Devils improve to 12-33 overall and 8-18 in Southwestern Athletic Conference play. Jackson State fell to 23-24 and 13-13 in league play.

The Diamond Devils jumped out to an early lead, with Tanner Aoki driving in the first run on a wild pitch in the first inning. Jackson State responded with four runs in the second inning, highlighted by Tyree Reed’s two-run homer. Mississippi Valley State answered back, tying the game in the third with a pair of RBI doubles from Stephen Landaz and Gabe Huelsing.

In the fifth inning, the Diamond Devils took control with a two-RBI single from Isreal Ramos and a two-RBI single from Kendall Brookins. They extended their lead further with a pair of runs in the sixth, including an RBI double from Eric Williams and a two-RBI single from Brookins. Jackson State made a late push, but Mississippi Valley State held on, scoring twice in the top of the seventh and adding two more in the ninth to secure the win.

Stephen Landaz, Isreal Ramos, Gabe Huelsing, Eric Williams, and Cody Leming each had multi-hit performances. Landaz and Ramos contributed key RBIs, while Aoki and Brookins led the team with three and two RBIs, respectively. Freshman Matthew Cuzco earned his first save of the season, and Lucas Valencia pitched 4.2 innings of relief for the win.

The teams will meet again Sunday at 1 p.m. Fans are encouraged to arrive early to support the team’s ten seniors during Senior Day activities. The Diamond Devils aim to win the season series against Jackson State for the first time in 17 years.
