Southern Defeats Mississippi Valley State 12-2 in Series Opener

Southern University’s baseball team beat Mississippi Valley State 12-2 on Friday at Magnolia Field in Itta Bena, Mississippi. The Jaguars improved to 22-21 overall and 15-7 in SWAC play, while the Diamond Devils fell to 11-29 and 7-15 in conference.

Tanner Aoki was the only Mississippi Valley State player to reach base in all four of his plate appearances. He went 2-for-2 with two walks and scored one run. Johnny Escobalez Jr. also reached multiple times, doubling and drawing a walk. Ty Burns contributed a double, and RBIs came from a single by Tom Early and a fielder’s choice by Chris Soeder during the eighth inning.

Southern jumped to an early lead with a three-run first inning, highlighted by Glenn Green III’s double that scored two runs. The Jaguars added to their lead throughout the game, including homers from Green and Jaylon Lucky. They scored in every inning from the first through the eighth, building a comfortable advantage.

Mississippi Valley State will try to even the series at 5 p.m. Saturday night in the Delta. The teams have met four times since 2012, with Southern holding a 4-0 series lead.

The game’s scoring summary shows Southern’s offense was active early, while the Diamond Devils struggled to mount a comeback. The teams will continue the series on Saturday, seeking to change the current outcome.
