Millsaps Baseball Caps Regular Season with Thriller Against Southwestern
The Millsaps College baseball team wrapped up its regular season with a three-game series against Southwestern University over the weekend, earning a series victory. The Majors split Saturday’s doubleheader, winning the first game 4-2 before falling 9-5 in the second. They completed the series with a 12-11 win in a competitive Sunday matchup at Twenty Field, with the game highlighted by a late rally.
Prior to Sunday’s game, Millsaps honored nine senior student-athletes during a ceremony. The seniors are Andrew Bradley, Stewart Bonnecaze, Layne Cross, Ryan Laiche, Mason Morgan, Weston Myers, EJ Ousley, Sam Thomas, and RJ VanBeber. The players were recognized for their contributions and leadership over four years with the program.
In Game One, freshman Jackson Devey pitched 4.1 innings, allowing two earned runs and striking out four. Sophomore John Montour relieved and earned the win with 4.2 innings, three strikeouts and three hits allowed. Wesley Grant scored two runs, added a triple, and stole a base. Sophomore Carston Williams drove in two runs, while senior EJ Ousley homered and drove in two RBIs. Moberly contributed with two hits, including a double, and scored a run.
The game was tightly contested. Grant scored in the first inning, and Millsaps took a 3-1 lead after Ousley’s two-run homer in the fourth. Southwestern rallied to tie the game, but Millsaps responded with a clutch double from Moberly and a sacrifice fly by Williams to regain the lead. Montour closed out the game in the ninth, securing the victory.
In Game Two, Southwestern responded with a 9-5 win. Sophomore Fred Fields pitched 0.2 innings in relief. Weston Myers pitched 2.2 innings, allowing one earned run. RJ VanBeber finished with a scoreless inning, earning his first collegiate save. Grant had two runs and a double, while Morgan added two RBIs and a run. Williams and Cross each contributed with two hits, including a double.
Southwestern took an early 2-0 lead and extended it to 6-0 before Millsaps scored in the sixth. The Majors rallied in the eighth, with Grant, Williams, Morgan, and Ousley each contributing key hits and RBIs. Despite the comeback effort, Southwestern held on for the win, with Millsaps falling short in the series finale.
The final game of the series was a high-scoring thriller, with Millsaps edging Southwestern 12-11. Senior Sam Thomas pitched 3 innings, striking out eight and earning the win. Andrew Bradley added 2.2 innings, and Ryan Laiche pitched 3.1 innings with six strikeouts. Mason Morgan delivered a grand slam, driving in four runs. Grant and Williams each had strong offensive days, with Grant collecting three hits and Williams driving in four RBIs.
The game saw multiple lead changes, with Millsaps rallying in the fourth to take control. Morgan’s grand slam in the fourth inning was a key moment. The teams traded runs in the seventh, but Millsaps held on in the final innings to secure the victory. The win marks a strong finish to the regular season as the team prepares for postseason honors and upcoming conference announcements.
