The Northwest Mississippi Community College volleyball team extended its winning streak to 13 matches Monday night, matching the program’s longest run. The Rangers defeated Northeast Mississippi Community College in straight sets at Howard Coliseum.
Northwest hit .280 as a team, building on a season average above .250. Head Coach Allison Burchyett praised her team’s balanced attack and consistent serve game. “The team hitting .250 is amazing, especially with all the different players who contributed for us tonight on the front row,” she said.
The opening set was close early but shifted in Northwest’s favor after Sofia Gonzalez’s long service run, which included two aces. The Rangers pulled away, aided by Adalyn Callahan’s serving streak, and won 25-12. They recorded five aces and nine kills in the set, with Talley Taylor matching Gonzalez for team-high kills.
Set two saw Northwest jump out to a 7-1 lead behind Ariana Woods’ strong serving. Northeast rallied to stay within five points but couldn’t catch up. Callahan’s aces again sparked the team, helping the Rangers secure a 25-16 victory. Woods and Payton Davis combined for a decisive block to close the set.
The third set was competitive early but saw Northwest break away with a 5-3 lead on Dallas White’s serve. Callahan contributed with four consecutive points, and Woods added three aces during a nine-point rally to finish the match. The set ended 25-11, sealing the sweep and improving the team’s season record to 13-0.
Freshman Amaure’i Jones from Lake said the team is proud of its start. “We take a lot of pride in it,” she said, noting the team’s chemistry and energy. The Rangers’ attack was led by Gonzalez and Woods, each with eight kills. Valerie Hurdle added seven, and Taylor posted a .750 hitting percentage with six kills on eight attempts.
Chloe Rodriguez led in assists with 18, followed by White with 13. Northwest’s serving was a key factor, as the team recorded 14 aces with only seven errors. Defensively, the team totaled 38 digs, with Callahan, Reese McIntosh, and Laney Wier each contributing six. Woods also added four blocks, and Rodriguez finished with three.
Northwest will face Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College on Wednesday before traveling to Alabama for tournament play. Despite a busy week ahead, Jones said the team plans to maintain its focus and mindset. “We have the same goal: going in, thinking to win,” she said.
