The Northwest Mississippi Community College volleyball team improved to 12-0 this season after a three-set victory over Meridian Community College on Wednesday night at Graham Gymnasium. The Rangers won 25-14, 25-17, 27-25, holding off a late charge from the Eagles in the third set to secure the win, according to coach Allison Burchyett.
Northwest struggled early in the first set but rallied with a five-point run led by Reese McIntosh on serve. The Rangers closed the set on a 15-5 run, with key kills from Sofia Gonzalez and Valerie Hurdle. The second set saw another run with Gonzalez serving, turning a 7-2 deficit into a 19-11 advantage, backed by solid defense and passing, Burchyett said.
In the third set, Northwest built a 10-2 lead but committed several errors, allowing Meridian to take a 16-12 lead. The Rangers responded with strong kills from Hurdle and Gonzalez, tying the score multiple times before finally winning 27-25. Gonzalez led the team with 13 kills unofficially, with Woods and Hurdle adding six and four, respectively.
Libero Jania Rose emphasized the importance of focusing on details during the comeback, citing communication and energy. The team also excelled at the net, with Woods and Rodriguez each recording multiple blocks. Northwest will host Northeast Mississippi Community College on Monday at Howard Coliseum at 6 p.m., streaming the match on Ranger TV.
