Southern Miss Men’s Golf to Debut at NCAA Athens Regional
The University of Southern Mississippi men’s golf team is set to make its NCAA regional debut at the Athens Regional in Georgia. The event will be held at the University of Georgia Golf Course from May 18-20.
The 54-hole tournament features 13 NCAA-selected teams and 10 individual players. Each team will play 18 holes daily on the par-71 course, designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr. Southern Miss will start with Matthew Javier on hole 10 at 8:25 a.m. Monday.
The Golden Eagles’ roster includes Sun Belt Freshman of the Year Jake Moffitt, who leads the team with a 70.97 stroke average. Moffitt has posted 21 rounds of par or better and recorded a low round of 66. The Ripley, Mississippi, native has five top-10 finishes in 30 rounds.
Benjamin Fernandez, a junior, averages 71.20 strokes and finished top three at the Sun Belt Championship. Javier, a sophomore, maintains a 72.00 average with a low round of 64. Amornchaichan, a junior, is coming off a top-10 finish at the conference championship, with a 73.54 average. Walker Wise completes the lineup with a 74.19 stroke average.
The Athens course has hosted multiple NCAA Regionals and was the site of a Web.com Tour event from 2010 to 2013. The top five teams and individuals not on those teams from each regional will advance to the NCAA Championship at the Omni La Costa Resort and Spa in California.
The other regional sites include Bermuda Run, North Carolina; Bryan, Texas; Columbus, Ohio; Corvallis, Oregon; and Marana, Arizona. The field includes teams from Auburn, Illinois, Vanderbilt, BYU, Georgia, Louisville, Kansas, Northwestern, College of Charleston, Rice, Harvard, Howard, and Southern Miss.
