Southern Miss Men’s Golf Finishes Seventh at NCAA Athens Regional

ATHENS, Ga. — Southern Miss men’s golf shot a 10-under 278 in the final round of the NCAA Athens Regional, climbing three spots to finish seventh at the University of Georgia Golf Course on Wednesday, according to university athletics.

Head coach Eddie Brescher credited disciplined and aggressive play for the team’s strong finish. “We talked about being disciplined, but aggressive to close out and make a run,” Brescher said. “The guys stepped up and did a fantastic job of that.”

Freshman Jake Moffitt led the team with a 4-under 67 in the final round, finishing in sixth place individually at 10-under overall. Moffitt recorded seven birdies, including four on the front nine, and totaled 16 birdies across the tournament, tied for third most in the field.

Sophomore Matthew Javier posted a 7-under 64 in the final round, his lowest of the season, helping him jump 23 spots to finish tied for 28th individually at 3-under for the tournament. Javier improved after a 7-over opening round and a 2-under second round.

Junior Benjamin Fernandez shot a 2-under 69, highlighted by three birdies on the front nine. Fernandez finished tied for 39th at 2-over for the event, excelling on par-5 holes with a 4.67 stroke average.

Southern Miss finished just two spots shy of earning a spot in the NCAA Championships, with Vanderbilt, Louisville, Auburn, BYU, and Georgia advancing to the national finals. Brescher praised his team’s resilience, noting it was arguably the program’s best season ever. “The amount of maturity and grit this team showed to bounce back over the final 36 holes is amazing,” he said.

Other team scores included Supakorn Amornchaichan, who finished with a 3-over 74, and redshirt junior Walker Wise, who concluded with a 6-over 77. Wise was notable on par-5s with a 4.44 stroke average.

Southern Miss’s team and individual results reflect a competitive effort at the regional, with Moffitt and Javier leading the way. The Golden Eagles’ season ends at the regional level, but they leave with a historic performance and high hopes for the future.
