Southern Miss Men’s Golf Players Earn All-Conference Honors, Moffitt Named Freshman of the Year
Hattiesburg, Mississippi — Three Southern Miss men’s golfers received All-Sun Belt awards Tuesday afternoon, according to league officials. The honors mark a significant achievement for the program, said head coach Eddie Brescher.
Jake Moffitt, a freshman from Ripley, Mississippi, was named the Sun Belt Freshman of the Year and earned a spot on the All-Conference Second Team. Junior Benjamin Fernandez from Paraguay was selected for the First Team, while sophomore Matthew Javier from Toronto made the Third Team.
Moffitt, ranked No. 202 nationally, made an immediate impact, helping the Golden Eagles win two consecutive tournaments, the JT Poston Invitational and the Badger Invitational. His season included three top-five finishes and a school-record 21 rounds of par or better, with an average score of 70.4 over 30 rounds, according to team records.
Fernandez posted a scoring average of 71.3 and recorded four top-three finishes, contributing significantly to the team’s historic season. Javier, with a scoring average of 71.4, recorded two top-five finishes and helped the team secure top finishes at key tournaments.
Coach Brescher praised all three players, emphasizing Moffitt’s maturity and Fernandez’s consistent performance. The team last had three players earn All-Conference honors during the 2022-23 season, underscoring the significance of this achievement.
