Southern Miss Men’s Golf Aims to Repeat at Badger Invitational

The University of Southern Mississippi men’s golf team heads to Madison, Wis., for the Badger Invitational, aiming to defend its title. The three-day tournament, hosted by Wisconsin at The University of Wisconsin Golf Course, runs from Sunday, Sept. 27, through Tuesday, Sept. 29.

Southern Miss won last year’s event, topping a 14-team field with a 23-under-par score of 841. The team’s rounds included 279, 278, and 284 strokes. The Golden Eagles finished 10 strokes ahead of Southern Illinois and Illinois State, who tied for second. It marked their second team victory of that fall season, part of a 41-2-0 run through three events under coach Eddie Brescher.

The team lineup includes seniors Benjamin Fernandez and Supakorn Amornchaichan, juniors Matthew Javier and Franco Fernandez, and sophomore Jake Moffitt. No individual from the team is entered in this year’s field. Three of the five players participated in last year’s winning squad.

Fernandez, then a junior, shot a four-under 68 in the final round last year, finishing tied for third individually. Moffitt led the field last year with 17 birdies and tied for fifth after rounds of 71, 66, and 71. Javier, a sophomore at the time, posted scores of 68, 71, and 73 to tie for seventh. Amornchaichan, a senior, finished in the top 10 twice last season, with a scoring average of 72.91.

Franco Fernandez, a freshman making his debut last week at the JT Poston Invitational, will also compete. Fans can follow live scoring online. The team’s lineup for the event will tee off from Hole 1, starting with Franco Fernandez at 10 a.m.
