Southern Miss Men’s Golf Opens NCAA Athens Regional in 11th Place
ATHENS, Ga. — Southern Miss men’s golf opened the NCAA Athens Regional with an 11th-place finish, ending the first round at the University of Georgia Golf Course, according to school officials.
Freshman Jake Moffitt highlighted the Golden Eagles’ effort, shooting a 4-under 67 to tie for fourth place. Moffitt recorded five birdies and ranked in the top eight on par-4s with an average of 3.82 strokes.
Junior Supakorn Amornchaichan shot a 1-over 72, finishing with 13 pars. After a bogey on hole 10, he responded with six straight pars and a birdie to finish the front nine even. He added six more pars on the back nine, tying for 12th in pars among participants.
The team shot a 5-over 289 through the opening 18 holes. Louisville led with a 10-under, followed by Auburn and Vanderbilt, tied at 7-under. BYU was fourth at 6-under, with Rice and Georgia tied for fifth at 5-under.
Redshirt junior Walker Wise posted a 3-over 74, and junior Benjamin Fernandez finished with a 5-over 76. Wise and Fernandez combined for 20 pars and five birdies, with Wise in a tie for 52nd and Fernandez tied at 65th. Sophomore Matthew Javier shot a 7-over 78, finishing 71st with 11 pars and one birdie. Javier closed his round with five straight pars, capped by a birdie.
