Southern Miss Men’s Golf Ties for 10th at NCAA Athens Regional After Second Round

ATHENS, Ga. — Southern Miss men’s golf moved into a tie for 10th place after shooting a 5-under 279 in the second round of the NCAA Athens Regional at the University of Georgia Golf Course on Tuesday. The Golden Eagles improved their score and are now even par for the tournament.

Junior Benjamin Fernandez led Southern Miss with a 3-under 68, his only blemish coming from a bogey on hole 18. Fernandez, a Paraguay native, recorded four birdies, three on par-4s, and jumped 22 spots in the individual standings to tie for 43rd.

Freshman Jake Moffitt and sophomore Matthew Javier each carded a 2-under 69, combining for nine birdies. Moffitt finished the day tied for sixth individually and ranks in the top five on par-4s with a 3.82 stroke average. Javier moved up 10 spots to tie for 61st after a solid back nine, picking up a birdie and five pars over six holes.

Redshirt junior Walker Wise added a 2-over 73, recording four birdies. Wise, from Tupelo, Mississippi, performed well on par-5s with a 4.50 stroke average, ranking in the top 10 in that category. Junior Supakorn Amornchaichan posted a 3-over 74, finishing with a streak of five pars and a birdie over six holes. Amornchaichan is tied for first in pars after two rounds with 27.

The Golden Eagles will play the final round Wednesday at 8:25 a.m., with Wise teeing off first. Live scoring is available online, and fans can follow the team on Instagram (@southernmissmg) for updates.
