Trey Johnson Named Jackson State Men’s Basketball Coach

Jackson, Miss. — Jackson State University has announced Trey Johnson as the school’s new men’s basketball coach, removing his interim tag. Johnson, a former Tiger, returns to his alma mater to lead the program, according to Jackson State athletics vice president and director of athletics Ashley Robinson.

“There are not many chances you get to have one of your own lead a program, and we have that with Trey Johnson,” Robinson said. “He brings a championship pedigree as a player here at Jackson State and has won at every level as a player and a coach. We are excited about the opportunity of having a former Tiger lead our men’s basketball program.”

Johnson has served as associate head coach at Jackson State for the past four seasons. During that time, he helped develop top talent and mentored All-SWAC performers, including Jordan O’Neal, Ken Evans Jr., Dorian McMillian, and Daeshun Ruffin. Before his tenure at Jackson State, he worked as associate head coach at Alabama State University from 2020 to 2022.

“I am deeply honored and humbled to be chosen to lead the men’s basketball program here at my alma mater,” Johnson said. “This university is more than just a place to me; it is part of my foundation, my character, the fabric of who I am. My family’s rich history with Jackson State has shaped my life’s journey. This opportunity is personal. It’s about pouring back into the same institution and city that poured so much into me.”

As a player, Johnson is regarded as one of Jackson State’s most decorated athletes. He earned back-to-back First Team All-SWAC honors in 2005-06 and 2006-07, and was named SWAC Player of the Year in his senior season after averaging more than 27 points per game. His achievements include leading the Tigers to the 2007 SWAC Tournament Championship and an NCAA Tournament appearance. Johnson holds school records for single-season scoring, free throws made, and free throws attempted, and joined the 1,000-point club in just two seasons.

His national recognition includes being named a Box To Row All-American, a Bailey Howell Trophy finalist in 2006, and the award winner in 2007. In 2020, he was inducted into the Jackson State Sports Hall of Fame. Johnson’s family has strong ties to Jackson State; his father, brother, wife, and extended family also attended the university. His wife, Dana Johnson (Yoshimura), is a former SWAC volleyball champion and Defensive Player of the Year.
