Delta State Women’s Soccer Opens Gulf South Conference Play at Valdosta State

The Delta State University women’s soccer team begins Gulf South Conference play Saturday with an away game against Valdosta State University. The match is scheduled for 1 p.m. Central Time at the Valdosta State Soccer Complex and will be streamed live on the FloCollege digital network.

Delta State enters the matchup with a 1-2-1 record following a challenging non-conference slate that included games in Florida and Illinois. The Lady Statesmen are looking to rebound from a 5-1 loss to Jackson State on Labor Day. Senior midfielder Caroline Chandler leads the team with five points on two goals and an assist. Chandler scored her second goal of the season in the loss to Jackson State.

On defense, the Lady Statesmen’s goalkeepers have combined for 33 saves, averaging 8.25 per game — the top mark in the Gulf South Conference. Kim Bircher, in two starts, holds a 1-1 record with 15 saves. Piper Burgess has made 18 saves on the season. On the back line, sophomore Evie Shepherd has played a team-high 286 minutes across four matches.

Valdosta State enters the conference opener with a 1-1-1 record after a 2-2 tie with Georgia Southwestern. The Blazers gave up a goal just 10 seconds into that game. Senior forward Sarah Hudson leads VSU with five points on two goals and an assist. Hudson scored in the 33rd minute to help tie the game against Georgia Southwestern.

In goal, sophomore Adrienne Cardona-Colon has 13 saves in three matches, posting a 1-1-1 record. The Winter Haven, Florida, native has faced 36 shots, including 18 in her last two games against Eckerd and Georgia Southwestern.
