Southwest Football tops Mississippi Delta with standout performance from Ronde Baker

Southwest Football defeated Mississippi Delta 41-24 on September 10 in Summit, marking their first win of the season. Ronde Baker led the Bears with a career-high 212 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 18 carries, according to team sources.

The Trojans struck first, taking a 7-0 lead after an 8-play, 71-yard drive. Southwest responded with a 75-yard scoring drive, capped by a 29-yard pass from quarterback Jakhari Williams to Tahj Williby. The first half ended with Mississippi Delta leading 10-7.

In the third quarter, Baker ignited the offense with a 42-yard touchdown run just 20 seconds into the half, giving Southwest a 14-10 lead. The Bears extended their advantage after a defensive fumble recovery for a touchdown by Caleb Bryant and a 66-yard run by Baker, pushing the score to 27-17. Nyrikius Johnson added two rushing touchdowns later in the game.

Southwest’s defense contributed with three fumble recoveries, including one returned for a touchdown by Nicholson. Demarcus Johnson led the pass rush with 2.5 sacks. Head coach Les George praised the team’s resilience and defensive effort, noting improvements from earlier games.

Southwest will host Hinds on September 17 for their next game, aiming to build on their recent success, according to coach George. The team finished with 392 total yards, including 212 rushing yards from Baker and 142 passing yards from Williams.
