Southern Miss Women’s Soccer Visits Mississippi State for Non-Conference Match
HATTIESBURG, Miss. — Southern Miss women’s soccer is scheduled to play a non-conference match against Mississippi State on Sunday evening at the MSU Soccer Complex in Starkville.
The Golden Eagles, coached by Mohammed Owens, are seeking their second win of the season after a 1-0 loss to McNeese on Friday. Despite dominating in shot attempts with 13 shots on goal, Southern Miss was unable to score, marking a tough start to their road trip.
Coach Owens views the game as an opportunity to build consistency before the start of conference play. The non-conference schedule allows the team to refine their attacking strategies and improve execution. Southern Miss will aim to recover on the road, following an opening victory against Alabama State.
Mississippi State, in its first year under head coach Kevin O’Brien, has opened the season strong with three consecutive wins. The Bulldogs defeated South Alabama 3-0 in their season opener and have since used exhibition matches against Memphis and Southeastern Louisiana to prepare for conference play. They bring momentum and home-field advantage into Sunday’s game.
The teams share a history dating back to 2002, with Mississippi State holding a 2-0 advantage in their most recent meeting last season. Southern Miss’s last win over the Bulldogs was in 2013, a 3-0 victory in Hattiesburg. A win in Starkville would be a significant achievement for Owens’ squad.
Southern Miss will focus on attacking efficiency and capitalizing on scoring opportunities. Goalkeeper Logan McGruder made five saves in the loss to McNeese and will look to help the team secure a second road win. The Golden Eagles return home Thursday to face Southeastern at 4 p.m. at the Marshall Bell Track & Field/Soccer Complex. Admission is free.
