Southern Miss Women’s Soccer Falls 1-0 at McNeese
LAKE CHARLES, La. — Southern Miss women’s soccer lost its first game of the season Sunday, falling 1-0 to McNeese at Cowgirl Field, according to team officials.
Sumayah Brown scored the only goal of the match in the 35th minute, unassisted from the right side. Her goal gave the Cowboys an early lead that they maintained despite the Golden Eagles’ offensive pressure.
Southern Miss dominated in shot attempts, putting 13 shots on goal compared to McNeese’s 12. However, they only recorded four shots on target. The team also generated 10 corner kicks but was unable to convert their chances into a goal.
Logan McGruder made five saves in goal for Southern Miss, helping keep the match within reach. McNeese’s goalkeepers, Celeste Marijnissen and Shannon Dempsey, combined for four saves to secure the shutout.
The loss snapped Southern Miss’s undefeated start following a 4-0 victory over Alabama State last week. Ryan Smith received a yellow card in the 82nd minute.
The Golden Eagles will play next at Mississippi State on Sunday, August 23, at 6 p.m. at the MSU Soccer Complex, according to team officials.
