Southern Miss Women’s Soccer Visits McNeese After Season Opener Victory

HATTIESBURG, Miss. — Southern Miss women’s soccer travels to Lake Charles on Sunday to face McNeese at Cowgirl Field. The match kicks off at 5 p.m. and is the teams’ first meeting since 2001, according to school officials.

The Golden Eagles enter the contest after a 4-0 victory over Alabama State Thursday. Head coach Danny Owens made his debut with Southern Miss, guiding the team to a commanding win with three different players scoring early in the match, sources said.

McNeese opened its season with a 2-1 win over Alcorn State Thursday. The Cowgirls scored twice in the first half, with Emma Korhonen netting her first NCAA Division I goal at 32 minutes and Gabbi Barusic adding another at 33 minutes. The team’s head coach, Alexsis Cable, emphasized energy and depth, with 23 players seeing action, including 11 making their first appearance in a McNeese uniform.

Last season, McNeese finished with a 4-12-4 record overall and a 3-5-2 mark in the Southland Conference. The team returns leading scorer Rhiannon Maynes-Tourond, who had six goals in 2025, along with freshman Isabella Baltov, a high school Gatorade Player of the Year, who scored 176 goals in her prep career.

Southern Miss aims to sustain its momentum and adapt to an away environment, while McNeese looks to build on its opening win. The Cowgirls will host the Golden Eagles at Cowgirl Field, where conditions could influence the match’s outcome.
