Vicksburg, Miss. — McNeese opened its season with a 2-1 victory over Alcorn on Thursday at Key City Park. The Cowgirls scored twice in quick succession in the first half to secure the win.
Emma Korhonen put McNeese ahead just past the 30-minute mark, converting a pass from Ella Grace Davis. Less than two minutes later, Korhonen assisted Gabbi Barusic for the second goal. These were the only shots on target for the Cowgirls.
Alcorn responded in the second half, with Larissa Joso Luma scoring her first goal of the season from close range after a turnover, bringing the Braves within 2-1. The goal came with just over 20 minutes remaining. Alcorn had several attempts afterward, forcing McNeese goalkeeper Celeste Marijnissen into three saves.
The Braves out-possessed the Cowgirls, holding the ball nearly 65 percent of the match. Alcorn took 11 shots, compared to five for McNeese, and had seven corner kicks. The teams’ two goals for McNeese were the only shots on target in the game.
