Alcorn State Soccer Visits ULM for Sunday Matinee
Alcorn State’s women’s soccer team will travel to Monroe, Louisiana, to face Louisiana-Monroe on Sunday at Brown Stadium. The match is set for 1 p.m. and marks the first meeting between the teams since 2022, when the game was postponed due to weather and later rescheduled.
Alcorn is not ranked in the United Soccer Coaches poll, and neither team is currently ranked. The game is part of Alcorn’s early-season stretch of three consecutive road games, which coach Kabiru says will test the team’s resilience and adaptability.
In a recent game against McNeese, Alcorn fell 2-1. Larissa Joso Luma scored her first goal of the season in the second half, but McNeese scored twice in the first 45 minutes. Despite the loss, coach Kabiru praised the team’s response and chemistry and emphasized the importance of mental and physical preparation for the upcoming matchup against ULM.
Louisiana-Monroe opened its season with a 2-2 tie against Little Rock. The Warhawks’ goal was scored by freshman Victoria Vinals, and they are adjusting to a new season after the draw. ULM’s last game featured a balanced attack with six players taking shots, led by Mara Grutkamp’s six shots, including a goal and an assist.
The series favors ULM, which holds a 3-0-1 record over Alcorn since 2005. The last meeting, a 2-2 draw, occurred in 2022 after weather delays. ULM previously won their first three matchups by a combined score of 20-0.
Alcorn’s previous game against ULM in 2022 saw Zea Anderson score twice, including the game-tying goal just after halftime. The teams traded chances late, with Anderson finishing with two goals and three shots on target. ULM goalkeeper Mickaela Leal made three saves, while Alcorn’s Paula Argelaguet had eight saves.
Both teams are looking to improve after their opening games. ULM aims to build on its season-opening draw, while Alcorn seeks its first win of the season after a narrow loss. The game promises to be a competitive contest with both teams eager for a victory.
