Alcorn Soccer Visits Nicholls State for Midweek Nonconference Match

Thibodaux, La. — Alcorn State soccer travels to Nicholls State on Thursday for a nonconference game set for 7 p.m. at Thibodaux Regional Sports Complex. The Braves seek their first win of the season after opening with losses to McNeese and Louisiana-Monroe.

Alcorn is currently unranked in the United Soccer Coaches poll, as is Nicholls State. Coach Kabiru expressed optimism, emphasizing the importance of learning from recent games. “We know what we did right the last time we played them, but every game is its own story,” he said. “This is a good opportunity to respond and show what we’re capable of.”

Nicholls holds a 9-3 lead in the all-time series, which began in 2009. The Colonels won the first six matchups before Alcorn’s victory in 2017. Last season, the Braves defeated Nicholls 3-1 in Lorman, but the teams have not played in Thibodaux, where the Braves are 0-5 overall.

The teams met most recently in 2025, with Alcorn rallying from a halftime deficit to win 3-1 at Key City Park. The Braves scored three goals in the second half, including a late insurance goal from Larissa Joso Luma. Goalkeeper Ainara Aldeano earned the win, as Alcorn dominated possession and shots in the game.

Nicholls enters Thursday’s game with a 1-0-1 record, having recently beaten Arkansas-Pine Bluff. The Colonels scored two goals each from Olyvia Pugh and Kaylie Harris in that contest. Other key players include Sydney Becker, Alyssa Wheeler, and Jezlyn Nelson, each with two goals this season.

Alcorn last played ULM on Sunday, falling 6-1. Grace Ambrose scored her first goal of the season in that game, which was dominated by the Warhawks’ offense. ULM scored six goals in the first half alone, with Harris netting two and Gealon adding an unassisted goal. The Braves managed five shots in the second half and scored late through Ambrose.

The match highlighted ULM’s offensive pressure, as they held a slight possession advantage. Goalkeeper Renata Da Rosa faced six shots and was credited with five saves. Alcorn looks to rebound Thursday and secure its first win of the season.
