Southern Miss Football Completes Second Preseason Scrimmage

The University of Southern Mississippi football team concluded fall camp Saturday afternoon with its second preseason scrimmage at Renasant Stadium. The nearly two-hour session was held in front of a lively Fan Fest crowd, featuring various situational drills including team periods starting at the one-yard line, red zone offense, and special teams work.

First-year head coach Blake Anderson described the scrimmage as markedly different from the one a week earlier. He noted that this camp has included more live situations than previous camps he has led, due to the number of new players on the roster. “Last week it was almost all open field with normal situations,” Anderson said. “This week was anything but that.”

Anderson expressed satisfaction with the team’s health, saying they avoided significant injuries during the increased live work. While he declined to grade the scrimmage without reviewing tape, he observed that the defense had the better day overall. “It was good to see the defense have a good day and compete the way they did in those situations,” he added.

The Golden Eagles will have Sunday off and will not practice Monday due to the start of the fall semester. They are scheduled to return to practice Tuesday afternoon. Southern Miss is set to open the 2026 season at home against Alcorn State on Saturday, Sept. 5, at 4 p.m. Tickets for the season opener and other home games are available at SouthernMiss.com/Tickets.
