Mississippi State Soccer Hosts Southern Miss in In-State Rivalry

Mississippi State’s women’s soccer team will host Southern Miss on Sunday at 6 p.m. at the MSU Soccer Stadium. The match will be streamed on SEC Network+.

The game comes after Thursday’s contest against Arkansas State was canceled due to lightning after 30 minutes. Chiara Tappe scored for MSU before the suspension, but her goal will not count, as the match was called early. Eden Nicholson also saw her first career start erased from the record due to the cancellation.

MSU enters the game with a perfect start to the season, having scored in the first two minutes of their first two matches. The Bulldogs have not trailed this season and have led for more than 168 minutes of the 180 minutes played. They are also ranked fourth nationally and lead the SEC with an average of 12.50 corner kicks per game.

Senior-to-be Kati Anne Shepherd, who reclassified early and is just 17 years old, scored MSU’s first goal of the season and became the youngest scorer in program history. The Bulldogs have won seven straight in-state matchups and are unbeaten in their last five meetings with Southern Miss dating back to 2014.

Southern Miss, now 1-1-0, opened its season with a win at Alabama State before falling to McNeese in a one-goal game. Coached by Danny Owens, in his first year, the Golden Eagles rank second in the Sun Belt in goals against average and have received four yellow cards in two matches. Their next game will be against Oklahoma State on Thursday.

Following Sunday’s game, Mississippi State will host Oklahoma State on Thursday at 6 p.m., also on SEC Network+. Fans can follow the team on X, Facebook, and Instagram under the handle “HailStateSOC.”
