Softball Drops Doubleheader to Trinity in Texas
The Millsaps College softball team lost both games of a doubleheader against Trinity University on Saturday at Trinity Softball Field in San Antonio. The Majors fell 4-1 in the first game and 5-0 in the second.
In Game One, sophomore Caroline Mathis drove in a run and stole a base, while classmate Brynn Arena contributed a hit and a stolen base. Sophomore Hailey Peterson pitched 2.2 innings, allowing one run and one walk while facing 11 batters. Arena singled and later stole second in the first inning, creating early offensive pressure for Millsaps. In the third inning, freshman Liza Gregg singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Mathis executed a sacrifice bunt to score Gregg, giving the Majors a 1-0 lead.
The Tigers responded in the bottom of the fourth, tying the game at 1-1 with a double that scored a runner. They then added three runs in the inning to take a 4-1 lead. Millsaps nearly rallied in the top of the seventh, with junior Allana Vasquez singling and the team executing a double play later in the inning. However, Trinity held on to win 4-1.
In Game Two, Vasquez, Peterson, and Gregg each recorded hits, while Arena drew a walk and stole a base. The Majors threatened early, with Vasquez singling and Arena reaching on a walk in the first inning. In the third, Trinity took advantage of a throwing error to score from second, then doubled to center to add two more runs. The Tigers extended their lead with a triple in the fifth inning, moving ahead 5-0.
Despite the deficit, Millsaps’s sophomore Ava Palumbo drew a walk, and Cannon reached on a fielder’s choice in the final inning. Cannon advanced to second on a wild pitch, but Trinity recorded the final outs to secure the 5-0 victory. Millsaps, founded in 1890 in Jackson, Mississippi, is a private liberal arts college. The softball team will aim for a better result in the final game of the series against Trinity.
