Millsaps Softball Wraps Up Season with Series Win Over Southwestern

The Millsaps College softball team concluded its regular season with a three-game series against Southwestern University over the weekend. The Majors split a doubleheader Saturday, winning the first game 5–4 before losing the second 3–1. They secured the series with a 4–3 victory Sunday at the Millsaps College Softball Complex, according to team sources.

In Saturday’s opener, sophomore Hailey Peterson earned the win, pitching two innings with one strikeout. The Metairie, Louisiana, native improved to 4–3. Freshman Hailey Marange pitched five innings, striking out three batters. Junior Kadence Cannon scored three runs, stole two bases, and contributed offensively. Peterson also added two hits and an RBI, while sophomore Ava Palumbo drove in two runs. Sophomore Kodi Jimmie recorded two hits and scored a run, helping Millsaps rally in the game.

The Majors responded after Southwestern took an early lead, with Jimmie and Cannon each singling in the second inning. Peterson’s single brought home Jimmie, and Palumbo’s sacrifice bunt scored Cannon to give Millsaps a 2–1 lead. The team extended its lead in the fourth inning, with Palumbo and Cannon scoring on singles by Jimmie and Gregg, respectively. Southwestern tied the game at 4–4 in the sixth, but Millsaps regained the lead in the seventh, aided by an error that allowed Brynn Arena to score the game-winning run.

In Saturday’s second game, Peterson pitched all seven innings, allowing three runs on seven hits with two strikeouts. Jimmie led offensively with three hits, and Ella Morgan Sears contributed with a single and two stolen bases. Millsaps scored first in the first inning on a sacrifice fly from Arena, but Southwestern took the lead in the sixth inning and held on for the win.

The series concluded Sunday with a 4–3 win for Millsaps. Senior Julia Strain, in her final collegiate appearance, recorded two hits. Millsaps took an early lead after Mathis scored on a wild pitch in the first inning. The team extended its lead in the fifth, with Sears, Vasquez, and Strain contributing key hits. Southwestern mounted a late rally, scoring twice in the seventh, but Millsaps held on for the victory. Vasquez pitched a complete game, earning her sixth win of the season with five strikeouts and two walks.

The team now awaits the announcement of the All-Conference Team by the Southern Athletic Association.
