Millsaps Women’s Soccer Edges Huntingdon 4-3 in Final Minutes

Millsaps College women’s soccer team defeated Huntingdon 4-3 Tuesday at Harper Davis Field in Jackson, Mississippi. The Hawks outshot the Majors 17-10 and put 13 shots on goal, but Millsaps goalkeeper Olivia Umanzor made 10 saves to help secure the win.

The Majors scored twice in each half, marking their most goals in a season-opening match since 2011. Freshman Victoria Viquez scored on her only shot and added an assist for a team-high three points. Classmate Haile Moorer scored and led Millsaps with six shots, with two on goal. Freshman Suzanna Busbee also scored on her lone shot attempt.

Umanzor recorded five saves in each half during her 90-minute effort. The game featured nearly 30 minutes of 10-on-10 play after red cards were issued to players from both teams in the 61st minute.

Millsaps opened the scoring in the 14th minute when Viquez finished a pass from Henley Havens. Busbee scored shortly after, assisted by Viquez, to give Millsaps a 2-0 lead. Huntingdon responded with a goal from Kendall Remerow in the 39th minute, and the teams went into halftime with the score at 2-1.

The second half saw multiple lead changes. The Hawks tied the match at 2-2 in the 65th minute, but Moorer scored 19 seconds later off a restart to put Millsaps ahead 3-2. Huntingdon answered with a goal from Shaylinn McFarland in the 73rd minute to tie the game again. An own goal from the Hawks in the 86th minute sealed the victory for Millsaps.

Umanzor made two crucial saves late, stopping shots from McFarland and Xiomara Barnette, to preserve the lead. Millsaps finished off the game with a shot that went wide in the 88th minute.
