Mississippi State’s Weed Ties for Lead After Opening Round at SEC Championship
BELLEAIR, Fla. — Mississippi State’s Avery Weed shot a bogey-free 66 to share the lead after the first round of the SEC Championship at Pelican Golf Club, according to the university’s athletics department.
Weed, a junior, added four birdies on Friday to finish at 4-under par. It marked her lowest round in three seasons at the SEC Championship and her eighth in the 60s this season, the fifth-most in a single season in program history, the school said.
The 16th-ranked Bulldogs started slow, sitting near the bottom of the leaderboard at the turn. After the back nine began, Mississippi State posted 11 birdies against four bogeys to rally back to even par for the round. The team is three shots above the projected cutline of 3-over entering Saturday’s play.
Moa Stridh played a key role in the comeback, finishing her final six holes with three consecutive birdies to end the day at even par. She is just outside the top 20 entering the second round.
The Bulldogs will resume play Saturday at 7:50 a.m. CT. Live scoring is available at scoreboard.clippd.com, the school said.
Mississippi State is tied for seventh among the 15 teams. Vanderbilt, Texas A&M and Florida lead the tournament at 4-under par, according to the leaderboard.
