Avery Weed Named to WGCA Player of the Year Watch List
FRISCO, Texas — Avery Weed has been named to the Division I PING WGCA Player of the Year watch list, the Women’s Golf Coaches Association announced Thursday. Weed is one of 12 players selected for the honor.
The award is given annually to the top player in Division I women’s golf. To qualify, players must complete at least 15 rounds during the season, including NCAA Regional Championships.
A junior from Ocean Springs, Mississippi, Weed has had a standout season. She has finished in the top 20 in all but two of her team’s stroke play events and began the year with five straight top-five finishes. Her third collegiate victory came at the Blessings Collegiate Invitational, where she finished 14-under par, becoming one of only two golfers to finish under par in the event.
She has finished par or better in 19 of her 27 rounds this season, including nine rounds in the 60s. That ranks as the fourth most rounds in the 60s in a single season in program history. Weed’s career total of 21 rounds in the 60s is the third-best mark among all Bulldogs golfers. Her 50 career rounds at par or better also ranks fourth in program history.
Weed is aiming for a 70.22 scoring average this season, the best of her college career. She and her team will continue postseason play at the NCAA Chapel Hill Regional starting May 11.
The Women’s Golf Coaches Association, founded in 1983, is a non-profit organization representing more than 750 women’s college golf coaches across the United States. The WGCA promotes college golf and supports education and competition among women’s collegiate golfers.
