Jackson State Women’s Soccer Cruises to 5-1 Win Over Delta State

Jackson State’s women’s soccer team posted its most productive offensive performance of the season Sunday afternoon, defeating Delta State 5-1 at the JSU Soccer Field.

The Tigers controlled the game from the opening whistle, scoring twice in the first half and adding three more goals after halftime. Jackson State outshot Delta State 29-13 and held a 17-6 advantage in shots on goal.

Sarah Portis opened the scoring for the Tigers in the 13th minute, finishing off an assist from Nahomy Portillo at the 12:20 mark. Less than five minutes later, Ryanne Hawthorn-Harper scored unassisted in the 17th minute, giving Jackson State a 2-0 lead heading into halftime.

Early in the second half, Mia Ortega extended the Tigers’ advantage with a goal at the 50-minute mark, assisted by Hawthorn-Harper. Karime Antonio-Lopez added a fourth goal in the 76th minute. Delta State responded with a goal by Caroline Chandler in the 80th minute, but Ortega scored again in the 85th minute to seal the 5-1 victory, finishing with two goals on four shots.

Ortega led Jackson State’s offense, while Hawthorn-Harper contributed a goal and an assist for a team-high three points. Portis and Antonio-Lopez each scored, and Portillo, Hawthorn-Harper, and Kammertoens recorded assists. Kianah Farmer played all 90 minutes in goal, making five saves and allowing just one goal.

The Tigers will travel to face Stephen F. Austin on Sunday at 1 p.m. for their next match.
