Jackson State Soccer Tops Austin Peay 3-1 at Home

Jackson State’s soccer team secured a 3-1 victory over Austin Peay on Friday at the JSU Soccer Field, thanks to a strong second-half performance. The Tigers scored twice after halftime, with goals from Ryanne Hawthorn-Harper and Kyla Gomez, to break a 1-1 tie.

Jackson State (2-6-0) produced three goals from three different players and was led by goalkeeper Taylor Osborn, who made eight saves to help preserve the win. Osborn played all 90 minutes, turning away three shots in the first half and five after halftime to keep Austin Peay off the scoreboard in the second half.

The Tigers applied early pressure, with Sarah Portis testing the opposing goalkeeper, Megan Waskiewicz, just over a minute into the match. Portis scored in the 19th minute, her third goal of the season, after an assist from Karime Antonio-Lopez. Austin Peay responded with a goal from Nya Gibbs in the 41st minute, tying the game at 1-1 at halftime.

In the second half, Jackson State regained the lead in the 74th minute when Hawthorn-Harper scored off an assist from India Wilson, her fourth goal this season. Gomez added an insurance goal in the 86th minute, her first of the season, sealing the 3-1 victory.

Offensively, Portis, Hawthorn-Harper, and Gomez each recorded three shots and one goal, while Antonio-Lopez and Wilson contributed assists. Jackson State outshot Austin Peay 20-19 overall and held an 11-9 advantage in shots on goal. They also forced Waskiewicz into seven saves.

The team will host Middle Tennessee State on Sunday at 1 p.m.
