Northwest Mississippi men’s golf wins first tournament since 2005 at Ranger Invitational
The Northwest Mississippi Community College men’s golf team won the Ranger Men’s Invitational on Monday and Tuesday at Tunica National, marking its first tournament victory since 2005. The team finished with an eight-over-par score after 54 holes, five strokes ahead of East Central Community College, according to school officials.
Head coach Adam Payne, in his third year leading the program, praised his players’ preparation and maturity. “I thought they came really well prepared,” Payne said. “The sophomores showed significant growth in emotional maturity, which made a difference. They stayed in the moment and didn’t let bad shots affect the next.”
Northwest entered the final day with a one-stroke lead and maintained it by shooting a three-over-par round, holding off East Central. Three Rangers finished in the top 10, led by sophomores Caesar Ingendorf and Atharv Sharma, who finished second and third respectively. Cole Elander tied for 10th place after a final day of four-over-par 76.
Ingendorf, a sophomore from Germany, posted a final score of 69, mixing six birdies with three bogeys. He finished three strokes behind the winner, Sam Arthur, who shot one-over on the final day. Despite the result, Ingendorf expressed confidence in his play. “I played decent golf. I was consistent, made some good shots, and didn’t lose any balls,” he said.
Sharma, who had been sick prior to the tournament, started at even par and finished with a bogey-free back nine. He credited the tournament as a positive start to the season. Elander struggled with the heat on the final day, shooting 76 after a strong start. Drew Tuccio added a 77, making a notable improvement from his second-round score. Davis Wilkins was the most consistent for the team, shooting 77 and 78 on the final day.
The team’s second five, composed of freshmen, finished eighth out of ten. Henry Powell led that group with a 76 in the final round. He tied for 34th overall. Michael Robbins and Jordan Stacey also finished in the top 50 in a field of 55 players. Payne praised the freshmen for their resilience amid fatigue and the higher level of college golf.
Looking ahead, Payne highlighted the team’s potential. “The chemistry of this group is amazing. That’s why we’ve achieved this so quickly,” he said. The Rangers will compete next on September 8 and 9 at the Full Moon BBQ Invitational in Montevallo, Alabama, hosted by the University of Montevallo. The event will feature NJCAA and NCAA competitors, including the women’s team.
