Jackson State women’s tennis advances to SWAC semifinals with win over Mississippi Valley

NEW ORLEANS — The top seed in the SWAC women’s tennis tournament, Jackson State, opened play with a 5-0 victory over eighth seed Mississippi Valley on Friday morning.

Jackson State’s newly crowned SWAC Player of the Year Paula Corbalan and all-conference first team selection Isabella Benavides secured the doubles point with a 6-0 win at No. 2 doubles, defeating Lilly Gansauge and Nina Schiks. The Tigers were awarded the second point by default before singles matches began.

Benavides also posted a 6-0, 6-0 singles victory against Tori Carter. Mariia Iordanova won at No. 2 singles with a 6-0, 6-0 decision, and Victoria Linkovski closed the match with a 6-0, 6-0 win, clinching Jackson State’s spot in the semifinals.

The Tigers will face No. 5 seed Florida A&M on Saturday at 10 a.m. in the next round of the tournament.
