Jackson State to Introduce New Men’s Basketball Coach Trey Johnson on May 4
Jackson, Miss. — Jackson State University’s Division of Athletics will hold a press conference at 10 a.m. Monday, May 4, inside the Lee E. Williams Athletics & Assembly Center to introduce Trey Johnson as the program’s new head men’s basketball coach.
Johnson was named to the position on April 15. He has spent the past four seasons as the associate head coach at Jackson State, where he has helped develop top talent and mentored several All-SWAC players, including Jordan O’Neal, Ken Evans Jr., Dorian McMillian, and Daeshun Ruffin.
He began his collegiate coaching career at Alabama State University in 2020, serving as associate head coach for two seasons. During his tenure, Johnson contributed to player development, recruiting efforts, and game strategy, boosting the program’s competitiveness within the conference.
As a player, Johnson is regarded as one of the most decorated in Jackson State history. He earned back-to-back First Team All-SWAC honors in 2005-06 and 2006-07, and was named SWAC Player of the Year in 2007 after averaging more than 27 points per game. Johnson led Jackson State to the 2007 SWAC Tournament Championship and an NCAA Tournament appearance.
He holds multiple school records, including single-season scoring averages, total points, free throws made, and free throws attempted. Johnson was also named a Box To Row All-American, a Bailey Howell Trophy finalist in 2006, and the award winner in 2007. He was inducted into the Jackson State Sports Hall of Fame in 2020.
