Jackson State Names Trey Johnson as Men’s Basketball Head Coach

Trey Johnson was formally introduced as the new head coach of Jackson State University’s men’s basketball team Monday at the Lee E. Williams Athletics & Assembly Center. The event was attended by family, friends, former teammates, and alumni.

Johnson was named interim head coach in April, and the university removed the interim tag on April 15. He has served as associate head coach at Jackson State for the past four seasons, playing a key role in developing top talent and mentoring All-SWAC performers such as Jordan O’Neal, Ken Evans, Dorian McMillian, and Deashun Ruffin.

Prior to his coaching tenure at Jackson State, Johnson served as associate head coach at Alabama State University starting in 2020. There, he focused on player development, recruiting, and game strategy, helping improve the program’s competitiveness within its conference.

Johnson is considered one of Jackson State’s most distinguished players. During his college career, he earned back-to-back first-team All-SWAC honors and was named SWAC Player of the Year in 2007 after averaging over 27 points per game. He led the Tigers to the 2007 SWAC Tournament championship and an NCAA tournament appearance.

He still holds several Jackson State records, including single-season scoring and free throws made. Johnson was also named a Box To Row All-American and won the Bailey Howell Trophy in 2007. In 2020, he was inducted into the Jackson State Sports Hall of Fame, recognizing his impact on the program.

Johnson’s ties to Jackson State extend beyond his playing career. His father, brother, wife, and other family members attended the university. His wife, Dana Johnson (Yoshimura), is a former SWAC volleyball champion and Defensive Player of the Year.
