CLARKSDALE, Miss. — The Coahoma Tigers fought back from a 21-point first-half deficit but fell to Jones College 27-14 in Thursday’s home opener at James E. Miller Stadium, according to school officials.
The visiting Bobcats built a 21-0 lead in the first half, scoring on two rushing touchdowns and a passing score. The Tigers responded in the third quarter, led by quarterback Jacob Clopton, who capped a 10-play, 54-yard drive with a two-yard touchdown run with 3:13 remaining. An extra point by Andrew Harrison made it 21-7.
Less than a minute later, Deshun Brooks intercepted a Jones pass and returned it 36 yards for a defensive touchdown, bringing the Tigers within seven points. Harrison’s extra point made it 21-14 with 2:29 left in the third quarter. Jones responded early in the fourth quarter with a one-yard touchdown run by CJ Rush, pushing their lead to 27-14.
Coahoma’s special teams made a notable play when Jar’Ketitus Davis blocked an extra point attempt. Despite their efforts, the Tigers couldn’t close the gap before time expired.
Coahoma finished with 228 total yards, including 154 rushing yards. Clopton led the rushing attack with 59 yards and one touchdown on 12 carries. He also completed nine passes for 74 yards. Isaac Day and Prentavis Madison contributed 50 and 45 rushing yards, respectively. Davis Harrelson led the receiving corps with two catches for 28 yards.
Defensively, Gregory Green led with 10 tackles, including three tackles for loss. Jason Spencer added seven tackles, including four solo stops and a TFL. Brooks’s interception return for a touchdown was the highlight of the defensive effort.
The Tigers (0-2) will seek their first win of the season when they travel to face East Central Community College on Thursday, Sept. 10.
