Jones College relies on ground game, defense to beat Coahoma 27-14
CLARKSDALE — Jones College built a 21-point first-half lead and held off a second-half rally from Coahoma to win 27-14 Thursday night at James E. Miller Stadium. The Bobcats amassed 494 total yards, including 279 on the ground, while limiting Coahoma to 228 yards, according to school officials.
Jones’ rushing attack averaged 5.6 yards per carry and scored three touchdowns. CJ Rush led the way with a career-high 137 yards and one score. Quarterback Jevarion Glover completed 18 of 28 passes for 198 yards, including a 26-yard touchdown to Jalen Jones.
The Bobcats took control early. With 7:08 remaining in the first quarter, Glover connected with Jones on a 30-yard pass for a touchdown. Jones then extended the lead late in the first quarter with Santae McWilliams Jr. rushing for a 20-yard touchdown, capping an eight-play, 91-yard drive. McWilliams finished with 93 rushing yards on 18 carries.
Jones continued to dominate the line of scrimmage in the second quarter. Terrell Surtain Jr. scored on an 8-yard run with 8:27 remaining, finishing a nine-play, 71-yard drive that put the Bobcats ahead 21-0. Despite missing three field goals, Jones kept moving the ball and scoring in the first half.
Coahoma rallied in the third quarter. Jacob Clopton, who also played quarterback for the Tigers, scored on a 2-yard run with 3:13 remaining, trimming the deficit to 21-7. Just 44 seconds later, Deshun Brooks intercepted a Glover pass and returned it 36 yards for a touchdown, making it 21-14.
Jones responded with a critical 74-yard drive. Rush powered into the end zone from one yard out, extending the lead to 27-14. The extra point attempt was missed, but the Bobcats’ defense held firm. Jones limited Coahoma to 74 passing yards, with Clopton going 9 of 26 passing. The Tigers did gain 154 rushing yards but struggled to convert yards into points.
Delarrius Hayes led Jones with seven tackles, and Malaki Page added six. Marcus Jasmin Jr. recorded the team’s only sack, and Dalyn Pierce forced a fumble. Jones hosts Northeast on Sept. 10 at 7 p.m.
