Coahoma splits doubleheader with Meridian, wins Game One convincingly
Clarksdale, Miss. — Coahoma Community College’s baseball team opened its doubleheader against Meridian with a 10-3 victory Sunday but dropped the second game 22-7, splitting the twin bill, according to the schools’ reports.
In the first game, the Tigers jumped out early, scoring three runs in the first inning. An RBI single from Anderson Walker, a Meridian error, and a three-run homer by Bryce Williams fueled the rally. Coahoma added to its lead in the third, with Landon Smith and West driving in runs. Ryne Herrington pitched a complete game, allowing three runs on six hits while striking out nine and walking one, per the school.
Offensively, Williams and Walker each drove in three runs. The Tigers drew nine walks and stole three bases, showcasing patience and aggressiveness on the bases. Defensively, Coahoma committed no errors, with James Washington handling 10 chances, according to team stats. Meridian’s Brown collected multiple hits in the game.
The second game was high-scoring and less favorable for Coahoma. The Tigers scored seven runs on 13 hits but allowed 22 runs. West went 3-for-3 at the plate, and Baker and Walker each had three hits. Meridian’s Brown and Jackson each drove in four runs, with Jackson drawing three walks. The Eagles also drew 14 walks and stole six bases in the game, according to the schools.
Starting pitcher Tanner Bridgewater allowed six runs over 4 1/3 innings for Coahoma, while Meridian’s Moore pitched four and 1/3 innings, allowing three runs on eight hits. Despite the loss, the Tigers committed no errors in the game, with Bryce Williams leading defensively with seven chances, according to team data.
Head coach Austin Biggs praised his team’s effort, especially Herrington’s performance. “I’m super proud of how well our guys competed today. They’ve been playing good, clean baseball all season. Ryne Herrington was the biggest highlight. It was really great to see him go the distance,” Biggs said.
