Alabama State beats Jackson State in 10 innings with walk-off homer
Jackson, Miss. — Alabama State defeated Jackson State 8-7 in 10 innings Saturday in a Southwestern Athletic Conference baseball game at Braddy Field. Trey Callaway’s solo homer in the top of the 10th inning secured the victory for Alabama State, according to the school.
Jayden Lopez pitched six innings for Jackson State, allowing six runs on six hits with 10 strikeouts and two walks. The Tigers’ bullpen struggled in the late innings, with Jaedeyn Edwards taking the loss after working four innings and giving up two runs on three hits with three strikeouts, per the school.
Jackson State fought back from a 6-3 deficit to tie the game in the eighth inning on a RBI single by Tyshon Patty. The Tigers took a brief lead in the seventh before Alabama State responded with a game-tying home run in the sixth inning and the winning blast in the 10th. Edwin Lemus Hudson Jr. went 2-for-4 with two runs scored, while Patty was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Diego Melendez also contributed with three RBIs for the Tigers, school officials said.
Alabama State opened the scoring in the first inning on a double by Niguel Jenkins that drove in Miguel Oropeza. The Hornets extended their lead with a four-run sixth inning, highlighted by a three-run homer from Jackson Williams. Jackson State trimmed the deficit in the seventh and eighth innings but could not hold off Alabama State in the final inning, according to the school.
