William Carey Softball Clinches SSAC Regular Season Title

POPLASKI, Tenn. — William Carey softball clinched the SSAC regular season championship following a doubleheader split against Tennessee Southern at Royce Hughes Field. The Crusaders secured the title after winning the first game and a Mobile loss, according to school officials.

Head coach Wendy Hogue expressed pride in her team’s performance. “The SSAC is such a strong conference. For us to have the opportunity to clinch the regular season title with games remaining is an amazing honor,” she said. “I’m just so proud of the girls and how they’ve played from day one. We’re clinging to 1 Corinthians 9:24 and will do everything in our power to continue to run in such a way as to win.”

William Carey opened the doubleheader with a 6–1 win behind timely hitting and steady pitching. Julia Shaw led the offense with a multi-RBI performance, while Albanie Fussell and others contributed key hits. Freshman pitcher Jayden Sawyer limited Tennessee Southern to one run on two hits, securing her 20th win of the season.

The Firehawks responded in the second game with a 1–0 victory, thanks to an RBI single from Hannah Lindsey in the second inning. That run proved to be the difference, as Tennessee Southern’s pitching staff held William Carey scoreless despite late-inning threats. Shaw, Fussell, and Hogue each recorded hits in the game, and Ryanne Hornsby was tagged with the loss after allowing just two hits.

William Carey will play its final SSAC series of the season next week on the road against the University of Mobile, with a doubleheader scheduled to start at 3 p.m., according to school officials.
