William Carey Women’s Softball Advances to Do-Or-Die Game at SSAC Championship
Decatur, Ala. — The William Carey Lady Crusaders earned a 2-0 victory over Mobile on Saturday at the Wilson Morgan Softball Complex, forcing an if-necessary game in the SSAC Softball Championship, according to school officials.
Both teams started aggressively. Mobile attempted back-to-back bunts to generate offense in the opening inning. William Carey’s defense responded by retiring all three batters without allowing a baserunner. The Lady Crusaders threatened in the bottom half, with Liz Cross leading off with a single and advancing into scoring position, but Mobile’s defense held firm to keep the game tied.
The game shifted in the second inning when William Carey took the lead. Kinley Hogue tripled down the left field line, and Jayden Sawyer drew a walk to put two runners on. Julia Shaw then delivered a single to left field, scoring Hogue and giving the Lady Crusaders a 1-0 advantage. The team loaded the bases with one out but couldn’t add to the lead, as Mobile escaped further damage.
Both teams’ pitching dominated the middle innings. Mobile managed scattered singles from Lillie Lanham, Miah Simmons and Bethany Dean, but failed to threaten offensively. William Carey’s defense was strong, highlighted by a double play in the sixth inning that stopped a potential rally.
William Carey added an insurance run in the sixth. Albanie Fussell and Hogue reached base, setting up Shaw’s RBI single up the middle. Although Mobile threw out a runner at third base on the play, the Lady Crusaders extended their lead to 2-0. Jayden Sawyer then shut down Mobile in order in the seventh inning to secure the shutout victory and force a decisive game scheduled for 1:50 p.m. Sunday.
