Jackson State Sweeps Alabama A&M in Softball Doubleheader
Jackson State completed a doubleheader sweep of Alabama A&M on Saturday, winning 6-4 and 10-0 in five innings at home. The Tigers improved to 22-18 overall and 13-5 in the Southwestern Athletic Conference.
In the first game, Alabama A&M took an early 2-0 lead with a solo home run by Mary Grace Whatley in the second inning. Jackson State responded quickly in the bottom half, scoring four runs with the help of patience at the plate and aggressive baserunning. Ariana Murillo delivered a two-run single during the rally, and Ka’Liyah Gipson added an RBI single. The Tigers maintained their lead, aided by a strong pitching performance from Brooklyn Morris, who pitched a complete game, allowing four runs on 12 hits and striking out four.
Jackson State’s offense was led by Murillo, who finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored, and Gipson, who scored twice, drove in a run, and stole two bases. Despite 12 hits from Alabama A&M, the Bulldogs could not overcome Jackson State’s timely hitting and defensive plays.
In the second game, Jackson State dominated offensively and defensively, winning 10-0 in five innings. The Tigers jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning, with key contributions from Gipson and Jace Jackson. They added four runs in the second, highlighted by a two-run double from Ariah Hill, and scored three more in the third and fourth innings.
Madison McDowell pitched a five-inning shutout, allowing only three hits and one walk while striking out two. Jackson State’s aggressive baserunning and disciplined hitting kept Alabama A&M off balance throughout the game. The Tigers finished with 11 hits and seven walks in the win, securing their third consecutive victory.
Jackson State will finish the regular season on the road at Florida A&M, with the first game scheduled for Friday at 5 p.m. CT. The team aims to carry its momentum into the postseason.
