Jackson State Uses Big Fifth Inning to Beat Arkansas-Pine Bluff 6-4
Jackson State scored four runs in the fifth inning to pull ahead of Arkansas-Pine Bluff and held on for a 6-4 victory in a Southwestern Athletic Conference game Friday at Braddy Field.
The Tigers (25-25, 15-14 SWAC) trailed 2-0 after four innings but tied the game with a pair of RBI singles. Jackson State then took the lead in the fifth when Tyree Reed stole second, advanced to third on a stolen base, and scored on an error. Reed later scored on a wild pitch, giving the Tigers a 4-2 lead.
Jackson State added two more runs in the sixth inning, capitalizing on a defensive miscue by Arkansas-Pine Bluff (23-31, 14-13 SWAC). The Golden Lions scored twice in the seventh before Jaedeyn Edwards closed out the game with two scoreless innings for his fifth save, tying him for the conference lead, according to the school.
Reed went 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI, while Hederick Torres also had two hits, including a double. Jayden Lopez earned the win, working seven innings and allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits with five strikeouts. Edwards pitched the final two innings, striking out one.
Arkansas-Pine Bluff took an early lead in the first inning, but Jackson State responded in the fifth with a rally that proved decisive. The teams will meet again Saturday at 1 p.m. for the series finale on Senior Day.
