Prairie View A&M Edges Mississippi Valley State 5-3 in Series Finale
Prairie View A&M defeated Mississippi Valley State 5-3 Sunday at Tankersley Field in Prairie View, Texas, to win the series. The Panthers improved to 13-36 overall and 9-18 in Southwestern Athletic Conference play. The Delta Devils fell to 12-36 and 8-21 in conference games.
Jaxon Haynes drove in the first run for Mississippi Valley State with a single in the second inning. Gabe Huelsing homered in the third, his second of the season, to give the Delta Devils an early lead. Zacarias Salinas responded with a solo shot for Prairie View A&M in the third inning, tying the game at 1.
The Panthers took the lead in the sixth inning with an RBI double from John Lawson. Prairie View A&M’s pitching staff kept Mississippi Valley State in check, with Camden Farmer tossing perfect seventh and eighth innings, including a strikeout. The Delta Devils made a late push, but fell short.
Prairie View A&M’s Zacarias Salinas and Gabe Huelsing each homered, providing key offense for their teams. Mississippi Valley State, which last beat Prairie View in 2013, remains seeking its next series win. The teams will face off again Saturday at 1 p.m., with Valley State aiming to end the season on a positive note.
