Alabama State Tops Alcorn in SWAC Baseball Series

Lorman, Mississippi – Freshman pitcher Kayden Sutton pitched 5.1 strong innings in relief, but Alabama State defeated Alcorn State 6-2 Friday afternoon in a Southwestern Athletic Conference baseball game at Willie E. “Rat” McGowan Stadium.

The Hornets (29-21, 19-10 SWAC) took an early lead with a three-run second and a two-run third, highlighted by Trey Callaway’s two-run single and solo home run. Callaway finished 2-for-5 with three RBIs.

Alabama State starter Jorhan LaBoy improved to 8-5, tossing just 40 pitches over four innings, allowing only one hit. Caio Araujo then pitched in relief, as part of a planned pitch count by the Hornets’ coaching staff.

Alcorn (9-41, 3-24 SWAC) struggled offensively, managing just three hits. Their lone runs came on a sacrifice fly from Jaylyn Bennett in the fourth and an RBI groundout by Kanious Davis in the eighth. Rayfield Adams III stole two bases in the fourth and scored on Bennett’s flyout.

Reliever Camden Matthews earned his sixth save for Alabama State, retiring all five batters he faced in the final 1.2 innings. The series concludes Saturday with a 1 p.m. game at Alcorn, which will feature a senior day ceremony honoring five players, including Adams and Wright.
