Southern Miss Baseball Names Kyle Cheesebrough as Assistant Coach

The University of Southern Mississippi announced the hiring of Kyle Cheesebrough as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for its baseball team Thursday. Cheesebrough will work under head coach Christian Ostrander.

Ostrander praised Cheesebrough’s experience, noting he has coached at the highest levels of college baseball. “Kyle brings an incredible wealth of experience from his coaching career, and he is a perfect fit for our program’s culture,” Ostrander said.

Cheesebrough joins Southern Miss after spending a season at Houston. He was part of Mississippi State’s 2021 College World Series championship staff and has helped teams reach the College World Series four times during his 17-year coaching career.

His coaching stops include Indiana, Louisville, and Pittsburgh. He helped Mississippi State reach the College World Series in 2019 and 2021, and Louisville appeared in back-to-back College World Series during his tenure. As a player, Cheesebrough also competed in NCAA tournaments, including Louisville’s 2009 Super Regional.

During his career, Cheesebrough has recruited or coached 18 All-American athletes and eight Freshman All-Americans. He has worked with 66 all-conference selections, including SEC standouts Tanner Allen, Justin Foscue, and Jake Mangum. In 2025, he coached All-SEC First-Team hitter Ace Reece.

Cheesebrough’s players have been selected in the MLB Draft 66 times. Notably, 11 Mississippi State players and 10 Indiana players were drafted in 2019, ranking third and tied for fifth nationally, respectively. Over his career, more than 20 of his former players have reached Major League Baseball.

He replaces Travis Creel, who left after seven seasons to become head coach at Jacksonville State. Ladd Rhodes will transition from assistant coach to hitting coach for the Golden Eagles.
