Week 1 NFL Highlights for Mississippi State Alumni

Mississippi State alumni made an immediate impact during Week 1 of the NFL season, according to reports from team sources and Pro Football Focus.

Montez Sweat of the Chicago Bears registered a sack and two tackles in a 59-37 victory over the Panthers. Sweat also recorded a tackle for loss and a quarterback hurry. Chris Jones recovered a fumble and made one assisted tackle for the Kansas City Chiefs in their win over the Broncos on Monday Night Football.

Defensive tackles Jeffery Simmons of the Tennessee Titans and Elgton Jenkins of the Cleveland Browns also contributed. Simmons made four tackles in a loss to the Jets, while Jenkins played every offensive snap at center in Cleveland’s 34-10 defeat at Jacksonville, earning a pass-blocking grade of 84.6, the second-highest in the league at his position.

On offense, Dak Prescott led the Dallas Cowboys with 175 passing yards and two touchdowns in a loss to the Giants. Jo’Quavious “Woody” Marks totaled 120 yards from scrimmage for the Houston Texans, including nine carries for 42 yards and three kickoff returns for 78 yards.

Other alumni saw varied action. Logan Cooke averaged 54 yards per punt for Jacksonville, placing one at the 11-yard line. Jaden Crumedy signed with Houston but was inactive in Week 1. Martin Emerson and Decamerion Richardson made their NFL debuts with New Orleans, with Emerson recording two tackles and Richardson one assisted tackle. Emmanuel Forbes appeared on special teams for the Los Angeles Rams, while Willie Gay Jr. contributed defensively for Miami, starting at inside linebacker with one assisted tackle.

Additional alumni, including Brenen Thompson and Seydou Traore, made NFL debut appearances on special teams for the Los Angeles Chargers and Miami Dolphins, respectively. Nathaniel Watson was activated from the Cleveland Browns’ practice squad to see action on special teams.
