Alcorn State Athletics Mourns Passing of Hall of Famer Arnold Walker

Lorman, Miss. — The Alcorn State University Department of Athletics announced the death of Arnold Walker III, a former Braves football player and 2025 inductee into the Alcorn State Athletics Hall of Fame. Walker, an Atlanta native and Ronald E. McNair High School graduate, died Saturday in Atlanta.

Walker made a lasting impact on Alcorn State football as one of its most accomplished running backs. He finished his college career with 2,806 rushing yards, breaking a school record that had stood for more than 30 years. His standout senior season in 2013 cemented his legacy, during which he rushed for 1,191 yards and 16 touchdowns, leading the Southwestern Athletic Conference in both categories.

He started all 12 games that year, averaging 99.2 rushing yards per game and 5.3 yards per carry. Walker rushed for over 100 yards seven times that season, including six consecutive 100-yard performances. His season-high was 156 rushing yards and two touchdowns in a victory over Southern in overtime, including the game-winning score.

Walker’s 16 rushing touchdowns set an Alcorn State single-season record, and his 96 points also marked a program high. His efforts helped lead the Braves to a 9-3 record, their first winning season since 2006 and first nine-win campaign since 1984. He was named the SWAC Co-Offensive Player of the Year and earned First Team All-SWAC honors. He was also a finalist for the C Spire Conerly Trophy and participated in the FCS Senior Scout Bowl.

Walker earned a bachelor’s degree in mass communications from Alcorn State in 2013. His contributions to the program were formally recognized in 2025 with his induction into the Alcorn State Athletics Hall of Fame.

“We are deeply saddened by the passing of Arnold Walker,” said E. D’Wayne Robinson, Alcorn State Director of Athletics. “Arnold was not only one of the greatest running backs to wear the Purple and Gold, but he was a proud Alcornite whose accomplishments and legacy will forever be a part of our football history.”

Robinson added that the university extended condolences to Walker’s family, friends, and former teammates. Funeral arrangements and memorial services will be announced when available. Walker’s legacy of excellence and perseverance remains a proud part of Braves football history.
